Premium Tyres

While British motorists will be largely familiar with the Michelin brand, they may not be aware that the French manufacturer sells tyres under a range of different brand names, including Kleber (once tyre suppliers to Concorde) and the popular off-road brand BF Goodrich.

The French company is the worlds second largest tyre manufacturer and the largest in Europe. Michelin has a extensive history with motorsport, having competed in Formula 1, MotoGP and endurance racing for many years. In 2009 Michelin supplied tyres for 41 of the 55 cars entered in Le Mans.

Michelin tyres enjoy a good reputation for high performance, with products consistently offering very good grip and handling, as well as a relatively high resistance to aquaplaning. Availability is usually good, with tyres available from national and regional chains, independent retailers and online fitters.

Goodyear tyres are premium, high-performance products, and drivers will have to pay a similarly high purchase price to benefit from them.

However, the slightly lower-priced Dunlop brand may prove a cost-effective alternative, as their performance is still high.

Goodyear is one of the top-three global tyre manufacturers. It also sells tyres under the Dunlop and Fulda brands.

Goodyear (based in Akron, Ohio) has a reputation for innovation and for developing advanced products.

At the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, for example, it revealed concept tyres, including one with three adjustable internal tubes for varying road conditions and another that captures energy to generate electricity to contribute to electric vehicle battery charging.

Competing with the likes of Michelin and Goodyear for global dominance in the vehicle tyre market, Bridgestone has been in business since 1931. Since then they have branched out from tyres to create everything from vehicle components, bicycles and even golf equipment.

Pirelli is the fifth largest operator in the world in the tyre sector, and is the leader in “Premium” tyres, the high range segments with high technological content.

Founded in 1872, today Pirelli counts 19 tyre industrial plants, in four continents, operating through a widespread sales network in over 160 countries around the world.

The Italian firm won the tender to supply tyres exclusively to the FIA Formula One World Championship from 2011-2013.

In Pirelli’s on-going motorsport history, its Formula One adventure is the latest chapter. The leading Italian company has been involved in motorsport competitions for more than a century, with the epic Paris to Peking road race its first win in 1907

With a history dating back to the 1870s, German tyre brand Continental is now just one subsidiary of the Continental Rubber Group. It produces tyres for everything from small hatchbacks to top-flight supercars, and also owns a variety of other, less well-known tyre brands, including Semperit and Uniroyal, as well as economy brands Barum from the Czech Republic and the Portuguese make, Mabor.

Continental tyres are among the highest performing currently available, and offer excellent grip and handling in both wet and dry conditions. This has made them popular standard-fit equipment on a variety of sports cars, and they are widely available both online and on the high street.

Mid-Range Tyres

Kumho are mid-range tyres and are considered to be as good as some premium brand. Kumho is a South Korean company and most of their tyres are made there.

Premium Japanese tyre manufacturer, Yokohama, has secured the prestigious NTDA ‘Tyre Manufacturer of the Year’ award for the first time ever at the glittering Tyre Industry Awards ceremony in Birmingham.

The hotly contested award is presented to the company that, in the judges’ opinion, demonstrates that it is the best all-round ambassador for competitive manufacturing, service provision and a role model for its peers in the industry.

“The judges were very impressed with the Yokohama entry,” said Stefan Hay, NTDA, Chief Executive. “Yokohama consistently scores very highly every year in the Tyre Industry Awards finals and this year it was felt that there could be no doubt that the relationships the company has established across the UK tyre trade, together with the glowing support it was able to demonstrate from its customers made it a very worthy winner!”

Speaking after collecting the award, David Seward, managing director, Yokohama HPT Ltd, said, “The NTDA’s awards are arguably the most admired and respected accolade that any company in the UK tyre industry can receive, so we’re absolutely thrilled to have won the title of Tyre Manufacturer of the Year.
